"There are two rules to success in life. One: Never reveal everything you know."
—Eddie Nigma

As one of the top players in Gotham's Rogues' Gallery, Eddie Nigma might be better know as The Riddler. He's smart, curious, and trying his best to turn over a new leaf. A life of crime needs to be in the past.

Appearance Well dressed and a sharp smirk is how Eddie shows himself to the world. It's a rare chance you'll ever see beyond what he shows you.

Eddie is frequently wearing the finest suits, the shiniest shoes and the silkiest ties. He finds comfort in a stiff suit, treating it as his personal armor. His unruly black hair is usually slicked back to complete the classic Houdini look. His smile is always sharp.

If you happen to catch him on an off day, it’s some kind of nerdy t-shirt (usually referencing something in the 80’s) and jeans or pajama bottoms. If he’s in his PJ’s, his hair has an unruly bounce to it.

Personality He loves being the smartest person in the room. He loves being funny. He loves feeling powerful. Those parts of him are predictable; you can always count on Eddie trying to get attention. That's all on the glossy top, the bright neon green that anyone can see from a mile away. What makes Eddie unpredictable are his moods, his fear, his gut telling him that he's never good enough. That dark part of Eddie that can be found in some Arkham Asylum file cabinet is dangerous. If he lets that part of him take control, he can spiral right back down into the Rogues' Gallery in a snap.

Decades of playing the rogue game has of course made his moral compass a deep dark grey. Why should he care more about some cop with a pension than his friend Harley who lost her favorite nickel? The connections he made in the underground of Gotham run deeper than the sewers and most rogues know they can go to Eddie if they have a mystery on their hands. While he was one of the most annoying rogues who faced Batman over the years, he tried to clean up his act towards the end. Chasing down mysteries while looking honestly at his own life made him feel like he was cleaning up. But, old habits die hard.

Growing up in Gotham City's sick joke called poverty made Eddie obsessed with money. His dream to become rich was his driving motivation towards robbing his first bank. It has kept him in the criminal scene for decades. Eddie knows what it feels like to grow up with no money and he will do anything to not live that way again. He knows what money means to other people, too, and is the first to side with someone trying to hustle for themselves. Eddie's more than happy to help out; especially if he gets a cut of the money for himself.

He never felt like he deserved love or friendship and easily squirmed out of relationships that got too serious. Eddie's loyalty is good enough for Gotham, but sometimes he thinks he knows better than his friends. He'll make choices for them for "their own good" because he can't face the tougher solution. Eddie doesn't learn from interpersonal mistakes easily, instead finding solace in proving to himself that he is unlovable. Playing the same song over and over makes it true, doesn't?

Abilities Smart and looks good in spandex.

History

Early Life

Eddie Nashton was the kind of kid that got in the way of dreams. His mother was a singer in Gotham City and his father was a security guard who pushed people around when they lingered too long or talked too loud. They met a few times at bars and casinos before having the not-so happy accident that was Eddie. His mother loved him, but his father saw Edward as nothing but a burden, a rope to pull him down into a domesticated life he was never meant for.

There was a lot of pressure to be great, to be smart, to be the best and Eddie did everything in his power to succeed. His parents were happy to find that their son did indeed have an incredibly high IQ and was proficient at math and history well beyond his grade level. To his parents, this meant he should always have high grades no matter what. A failed test meant being grounded or beaten, so he decided early on that failure wasn’t an option. He decided that merely studying or trying to do things the right way wasn’t good enough. He’d have to cheat. Eddie taught himself how to break into classrooms, desks, cars, homes. He spent his allowance on lock-picks bought downtown at a Chinese antique store. He even started to make money off selling tests and stealing permanent records.

Everything was going good until he was caught at age eight. By that point his mother had died of cancer in her lung and his father (who still resented him) was a sad, loathsome drunk. His father was so outraged and ashamed by his son’s cheating habit that he beat Eddie practically every night. He called him stupid over and over again until it made Eddie hateful and determined to prove his old man wrong. Edward never stopped cheating, stealing, and lying. He just got way, way better at it.

He would spend the rest of his life proving he was smarter than his old man could ever imagine.

Canon Life

History.

Death

Eddie dies just as he’s starting his detective agency, during the Gotham City Sirens arc. He’s trying to turn over a new leaf, much to the surprise of his rogue friends. Instead of surviving the bomb detonation at a gala party, it kills him. Pointless death due to rogue activity is a hell of a way to go.

Current Life

Eddie is currently a stage magician in New York City. He does all kinds of gigs and has recently returned home to New York after some time in Las Vegas. Most of his family history has been baked into what he believes his life is now (thanks universe), but he lacks the manic tendencies that came before he reformed back in Gotham. Eddie thinks he’s a kid that grew up in New York with a sad mom and an abusive dad. He stole to survive and did various odd jobs to get by, but it wasn’t until he discovered his skill in performing magic that he really got his big break.

He’s not an incredibly famous magician, but he can get by well enough that it’s his main job. For now, he’s happy doing a regular stage show and events around the city. He even dabbles in street magic in disguise when he’s feeling like testing out new tricks.

Despite his love for performing, Eddie is a lonely man. Most of his friends are fellow performers and he can’t seem to reconnect with them. His curiosity makes him jump into new things quicker and if someone he knows has a problem, he’s all too happy to help solve it.
